Browner the Watermelon

January 12th, 2009 by Bill Brown · 5 Comments · Politics

In the latest revelation regarding President Obama’s Cabinet-to-be, Carol Browner—his climate change “czar”—was outed as a leader of Socialist International’s Commission for a Sustainable World Society. The blogging right is outraged by The Washington Times report, but I’m sure Obama picked her precisely for the sort of beliefs she would have to have to be a leader of that group.

Environmentalism and socialism are natural partners in the attack on capitalism and freedom. Whether you regard man’s productive nature as a blight because it pollutes pristine wilderness or because it pollutes society’s will, you’re going to seek to rein him in. Man, in the environmentalist and socialist’s eyes, is a despoiler.

To achieve the 90% reduction in carbon dioxide production that Al Gore has called for, the administration is going to need someone experienced in the wholesale destruction of wealth and capitalism. What better choice than an avowed socialist.

Notice how the Obama team’s response to the criticism completely sidesteps the issue. She got valuable policy making experience, they say, so it doesn’t matter that she joined a group of America-hating socialists.

The Obama administration will bring great destruction of objective values–just as the latest Bush administration did.

However, more and more for the next four years I see great opportunities for advancing objective principles of politics and ethics, as well as their base in reason. The Obama administration is a very simple and clear target. Much better to fire at it than at the thoroughly dishonest George (I dumped capitalism to save capitalism) Bush brigade.

Thank you for highlighting another act in the Obama circus.

Is anyone surprised by this? I’m not. Reminds me of Myrhaf’s post, “The Power of Philosophy”. The only thing more ridiculous are the comments on the Washington Times article.

@Harold: I am not surprised by this in the least. You’re exactly right that it shows the power of philosophy: who else would be willing to take a position called “climate change czar” except a socialist?

@Burgess: I always thought Bush was a pretty clear-cut altruism/statism horror show, but it’s obvious that we Objectivists were alone in that clarity.
