Our mission is to combat the unreason and selflessness that are sweeping our culture from the nihilist left to the religious right, and to sound a new ideal of capitalism and individual rights in American politics.

The Supreme Court didn't find enough merit with Ms. Ledbetter's case, who I suppose this bill was signed in honor of. Think of all the other undeservings who will be given a boost thanks to Obama's "work." And beware reading the comments on the NYT's article, you can hardly hear your own thoughts amongst the cheerleaders.

Kyle:

"So, whenever somebody starts talking about things that “work”, stop them and ask “Work for whom? And for what?”"

That's a very good idea. I intend to use it.

In the sea of pragmatism that is modern America, we hear constant appeals to making things "work." We need government that "works," policies that "work," ideas that "work." Ayn Rand once noted that the concept of value is meaningless without answering two follow-on questions: of value to whom and for what? The same two questions should always be asked of things that allegedly "work:" work for whom and for what?

The typical American assumes that the answers to those two questions are "for individual Americans" and "to make their lives better." Obama's implicit answers seem to be "for the political elite" and "to make everyone else equal in outcome." A key part of the con is making sure those two questions are never asked and answered explicitly, because if they ever were the radical difference between where he is leading us and where the public thinks it is being led would become obvious and the sheep might become recalcitrant.

So, whenever somebody starts talking about things that "work," stop them and ask "Work for whom? And for what?"

The equal pay legislation will not raise the pay of less-performing employees to that of more-performing employees. It will do just the opposite. Here comes the slow erosion of excellence in the workplace. When I heard about it, I thought, "Can't these people see that?" But then, of course, I came to my senses. Of course they can. That's the point.

Great. Was hoping you'd comment on this recently passed law. In her piece "Conservatism: An Obituary" from CTUI, Ms. Rand talks about the logic of a con man (the liberal) who cannot let his victims know what he is about to put over on them. It applies very well here, I think.
