Our mission is to combat the unreason and selflessness that are sweeping our culture from the nihilist left to the religious right, and to sound a new ideal of capitalism and individual rights in American politics.

Myrhaf, I agree with you to a certain extent. Eliminating government corruption doesn't solve the problems inherent in a socialist system.

However, that doesn't mean we shouldn't fight corruption at every turn. Unfortunately, our current system is inherently corrupt. You only have to see how government money goes to heavy campaign contributors to realize the corruption in our government. Groups like ACORN are only the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

I happened to catch his show the other day and thought the exact same thing, Myrhaf.

Framing the issue in terms of "corruption" entirely misses the point of Obama's Socialism-pushing administration. Even if ACORN and all similar groups were out of the picture, Obama, his cronies, and their ideological allies in both parties would still be working to propel America into Socialism.

If this transformation were proceeding in a "non-corrupt" fashion, would our problems be solved, Mr. Beck?

I didn't think so.

<i>Imagine if Glenn Beck’s crusade somehow miraculously succeeded and all corruption was vanquished. What would we have? A squeaky clean welfare state.</i>

The colloquialism "polishing a turd" comes to mind...

Very good distinction Andrew. There is "corruption" when government officials fail to abide by legal stipulations and statutes and then there is moral "corruption" when they endorse coercive measures.

It's standard party politics. The Democrats beat up the Republicans with the "Culture of Corruption" a few years ago. In the late '80s the House Democrats took a lot of damage because of their corruption. It always works because corruption is something even people otherwise ignorant of politics can understand. Political and economic principles require some abstract thought, everybody understands that when a politician takes a kickback he is doing something wrong.

Corruption is basically the misappropriation of government resources for the purpose of doing something other than fulfilling its proper function -- protecting individual rights. So understood, the welfare state is inherently corrupt. The fact that it misappropriates the power of government under high-sounding motives rather than venal ones is irrelevant. Misappropriation is misappropriation.

That said, the mainstream understanding of corruption focuses only on the misappropriation of government resources for venal purposes, and as long as that is the case a crusade against corruption will miss the essence of the problem. The best one can say for Beck's position is that it provides an opportunity to make the case that *any* government action not directed toward protecting individual rights is corrupt, so that if one wants to 'clean up' government one must work to return it to its proper scope and function.

A corruption-free welfare state is still the same gun aimed at the populace, it just doesn't jam.

There's also the issue of procedural corruption (what most people mean by "corruption") versus systematic moral corruption.

John McCain said that he was willing to sacrifice free speech in order to fight corruption in government. But any government that regulates speech is <i>by that very fact</i> corrupt, and with consequences far more dangerous than the skewing of votes in an election or legislature.
